CBD is often touted as an effective treatment for various pains by people who have used it. In fact, even scientific research like this 2008 study have suggested that it could be an effective treatment for chronic pains. With so much interest in this intriguing compound, it’s no wonder that its use has not been limited to only humans, but to pet animals like horses as well.
While CBD hemp oil is an organic compound retrieved from the cannabis plant, it is important to note that it does not have any psychogenic effects on the user. This is because it reacts with different receptors – not the same endocannabinoid receptors that THC, the cannabis component with psychogenic effects activate. So, even if you feed it to your horse, it will not alter their state of mind in any way. Only its natural healing effects will be experienced.
CBD and Horses
Just like us humans, animals also need proper nourishment to function at their optimal level. They require various minerals and nutrients to function physically and mentally. For animals like horses, that use up high levels of energy on a daily basis, especially if they are performance-based, proper and healthy nourishment is imperative.
This is where CBD comes in. CBD oil is rich in essential fatty acids like Omega 3, 6 and 9, as well as GLA, which stands for Gamma Linolenic Acid. The body cannot produce them on its own, even though it needs it for health and nutrition, and hence, they must be consumed from external sources, like from our diet. These essential fatty acids are necessary for our cell growth, as well as the promotion of healthy skin and hair. This is a huge benefit for your horse, whose shiny manes and coat signify good health. They also contribute to memory other brain functions.
CBD hemp oil contains all the nine essential amino acids. These are necessary for various physiological functions as they are the component of a good proportion of muscles, cells, and tissue, helping the body to achieve a state of homeostasis.
Apart from these benefits, studies have shown that CBD has pain-relieving effects for many conditions that commonly affect horses. These are explained in detail below:
- Inflammation from sprains, fractures, and so on
Horses, whether they are farm or competitive ones, are prone to injuries like sprains, fractures, and even broken bones. This is because of the fact that most of their weight is supported by their two front hooves, which, as a result, makes them prone to accidents causing such injuries. In fact, this 2009 research which studied “Cannabinoids as novel anti-inflammatory drugs” suggested that CBD may be an effective treatment for a number of conditions that causes inflammation.
- Arthritis and joint pain
As per this study in 2016, researchers discovered that CBD had the ability to effectively reduce the pain that resulted due to arthritis. For this study, for a period of four days, CBD gel was topically applied on rats that had arthritis. The researchers later found that CBD significantly helped to reduce pains associated with arthritis-like joint pains as well as inflammation. Since arthritis is a rather common disease among horses, CBD oil could be an effective solution for it.
- Indigestion problems
Your horse may be suffering from a colon and/or digestion problem such as gas, indigestion or heartburn or maybe even serious issues like gastric and/or colic ulcers. Now, researches like this one suggested that “Cannabidiol reduces intestinal inflammation through the control of neuroimmune axis” and this 2016 study showed that cannabis can significantly help with inflammatory bowel disease. Hence, based on these studies, it is safe to suggest that CBD hemp oil can be used to treat indigestion problems in horses.
